Order of Protection applications are available at the clerk's office for Billings Municipal Court (2nd floor City Hall) and Yellowstone County Justice Court (6th floor Yellowstone County Courthouse). Return completed applications to the clerk's office for review by a judge. There is no charge for an Order of Protection.

Misdemeanors offenses that are committed inside the City limits are prosecuted by the Billings City Attorney’s Office, which are handled in Billings Municipal Court. These cases are investigated by the Billings Police Department. The website is as follows: Victim-Services-Information . The Billings City Attorney’s Office phone number is (406) 657-8205. All misdemeanors that are committed outside of the City limits but still in Yellowstone County, such as Lockwood, Shepherd, Huntley/Worden, Custer, and even some locations inside of the city limits, such as the Metra or certain parks, are handled in Justice Court and are prosecuted by the Yellowstone County Attorney’s Office. These cases are investigated by various law enforcement agencies such as the Montana Highway Patrol, Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office, Fish & Game, and Motor Carrier Services. The County Attorney’s Office also handles any and all felony crimes committed in all of Yellowstone County. The phone number for the Yellowstone County Attorney’s Office is (406) 256-2870. The website is as follows: Yellowstone County Attorney The Laurel City Attorney’s Office prosecutes misdemeanor criminal offenses that occur within the city limits of Laurel. A restraining order may be obtained from Municipal Court or Justice Court. Municipal Court will only consider orders involving partners or family members. All others must go to Justice Court. The first step is to pick up an application at the proper court and fill it out completely. The clerk of court will then make an appointment for the petitioner to see the judge.

What type of crime was committed and what agency arrested the person will determine when and where the person will appear. A person arrested for a misdemeanor offense by the Billings Police Department will be arraigned (or tried) in Municipal Court. A person arrested for a felony offense by the Billings Police Department will be arraigned in Justice Court then tried in District Court. People incarcerated (jailed) at YCDF for misdemeanors will be arraigned (or tried) at 7:30 am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, at the YCDF courtroom. People incarcerated (jailed) at YCDF for felonies will be arraigned at 3:30 pm, Monday – Friday, in Justice Court. To find out where the person will be arraigned call YCDF at (406) 256-6881.Police
