Compensation
Compensation Ranges
The City of Billings has four compensation ranges. All employees are eligible for annual step increases up to the maximum at Step 7.- Teamsters
- Teamster employees receive a 5% annual increase taking them to the next step in pay.
- Annual COLA increases are received on July 1, per their collective bargaining agreement.
- Management (Non-Union)
- Management employees receive annual increases from 0 – 5% based on merit and can be between steps in the range placement table.
- COLA increases require City Council approval and, if approved, are received annually on July 1.
- Police
- Police Department employee increases taking them to the next step in pay are based on years of service.
- Annual COLA increases are received on July 1, per their collective bargaining agreement.
- Fire
- Fire Department employees generally receive a 5% annual increase taking them to the next step in pay.
- Annual COLA increases are received on July 1, per their collective bargaining agreement.
Payroll
Pay Days
The City of Billings distributes paychecks bi-weekly, every other Friday. Each pay period covers 14 days, beginning on a Monday and ending on the second Sunday. Checks are dispersed five calendar days after the end of the pay period.
The department head, division head, or designated employee pick up and distribute the paychecks.
Compensatory Time
Eligible non-exempt employees may accrue compensatory time at the rate of one and one-half times the overtime hours worked, in lieu of overtime payment. This service is optional and must have department head approval. Compensatory time accruals cannot exceed the established limits of maximum compensatory time.
To receive a compensatory time payment, employees must submit a Comp Time Cash Out Request Form to Human Resources by 5:00 pm on the Friday prior to the payday you are requesting to have it processed, or the employee can use the cash out option in their electronic time entry.
