The Billings Police Department SWAT Team is a 15-member element of the Special Operations section. The team trains bi-monthly to carry out operations in the following areas: high risk warrant service, hostage rescue, barricaded gunman, response to active shooters, explosive breeching, VIP protective details and
sniper/observer support. The SWAT team stays abreast of current training methods by attending regional training and cross training with various other SWAT teams in our area. The SWAT team is used in conjunction with the Bomb and Negotiator teams, if an event requires those resources. In most cases, the SWAT team activates when the situation requires advanced training or tools that are not usually available to the patrol division. Ideally the training and tools of the SWAT team will allow the situation to end as peacefully as possible.
