What permits are required?

A building permit is required for almost any type of construction on private property including:

  • Roofing
  • Fences - at or exceeding a height of 8 feet and retaining walls exceeding a height of four (4) Feet. *** Contact Planning at 406-657-8247 to obtain a permit for any fence between a height of four (4) feet and six (6) feet. SEC 27-604 (h) Click here.
  • Siding
  • Decks
  • Parking lots

Some of the items that do not require a permit are:

  • Detached sheds not exceeding 200 square feet
  • Painting
  • Wallpapering and similar finish work
  • Sidewalks or driveways when they will not support a structure and are located entirely on private property

In addition, certain construction activities in the public right of way may require permits.
