The Billings Fire Department is proud to announce a significant ISO rating improvement. For the first time in the history of the Billings Fire Department, the Insurance Services Organization will change the department’s rating from a three to a two. Only 4% of fire departments in the nation are rated two.
The rating is used to determine property and casualty insurance rates. This means that Billings residents could see a reduction in their homeowner's insurance for fire protection after the new rating goes into effect on May 6, 2024.
A Class one rating represents superior property fire protection, and a Class 10 indicates the area's fire suppression program doesn't meet ISO's minimum criteria. Insurance companies then use this ISO rating for underwriting and calculating premiums for residential, commercial, and industrial properties. ISO evaluates more than 39,000 fire protection districts across the United States.
The upgraded ISO rating signifies that our fire department has made significant advancements in the following areas:
1. Emergency Response: Billings Fire Department has implemented robust emergency response protocols, ensuring that our firefighters are well-prepared to handle any emergency promptly and efficiently. This includes continuous training programs, regular drills, and the use of state-of-the-art equipment and technology.
2. Fire Prevention and Safety Education: Our fire department has actively engaged in fire prevention and safety education initiatives, targeting both children and adults in our community. Through workshops, seminars, and outreach programs, we have aimed to create awareness about fire safety practices, home fire prevention, and the importance of smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.
3. Community Risk Reduction: We have worked closely with local businesses, schools, and residents to identify and mitigate potential fire hazards. By conducting thorough inspections, offering expert guidance, and implementing risk reduction strategies, we have taken proactive measures to minimize the likelihood and impact of fire incidents in our community.
“I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the brave men and women of the Billings Fire Department for their unwavering commitment to our community's safety. Their hard work, sacrifices, and professionalism are truly commendable,” said Billings Fire Chief Pepper Valdez.
While we will continue to pursue the coveted rating of a one, this improved ISO rating showcases our firefighters' dedication and brings several benefits to our community. A better ISO rating increases the community's confidence in the fire department's ability to protect lives and property. It also highlights the commitment of our local government to prioritize public safety and allocate resources effectively.
